Summer Events in Roswell

The lazy, hazy days of summer means backyard cookouts, summer camps, and popsicles. These are just some of the reasons we love summer at Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs. This season is non-stop fun with Fourth of July, Riverside Sounds, Alive in Roswell, camps, and more! Come celebrate with us!

Many events require pre-registration and/or have a program fee. Click on an event below to learn more.

Femme Fatale: Works by Craig Ford

Femme Fatale: Works by Craig Ford
September 9-30, 2022
Tuesday - Friday, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Free and on display at the Roswell Visual Arts Center

Femme Fatale, an extremely intelligent, attractive and mischievous woman whose mysterious charms lean towards compromising situations. She is an archetype of literature and art, always associated with a sense of mystification and moral ambiguity. She never falls in love with someone but is often known to take advantage of opportunities that are given to her with tragic consequences.

This series of Pop Art influenced images feature a variety of famous and infamous characters/performers celebrated visually in a modern fashion. Using a variety of media such as oil paints, acrylic paints, enamel spray paints, inks, oil pastels, collaged paper on canvas and wood panels. These combined or mixed-medias were applied using traditional brushwork, some images being digitally altered in creating several handmade stencils.

Using a variety of celebrities from art history, Mona Lisa, the performing arts with women such as Marilyn Monroe, Gina Lollobrigida, Pam Grier, Marsha Hunt, Diana Ross, Judy Garland, Brigitte Bardot and fictional characters like Wonder Woman and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, along with others from film and television in a stylized fashion.

In an attempt to creatively stretch beyond the standard realism my more straightforward approach to painting, I wanted to come up with something fun yet abstract in composition. Portraits of famous individuals were subjects I had done very little with over the years and I wanted to approach this differently then my previous work. I found inspiration form such Pop-Art masters as Andy Warhol and the UK artist known as Banksy. So please enjoy this celebration of pop-culture icons.
