Municipal Elections

You must be registered 29 days prior to the election as a resident within the area in which you intend to vote. You must register to vote with the County.

Terms

Terms for all municipal offices are four years, with elections being held every two years. This means that three members run at one time with the other three running two years later. The purpose of this provision for staggered terms is to ensure that the Council is never completely composed of freshmen members.

Runoff Elections

Candidates must receive the majority of the votes cast in order to win an election. The majority is more than half of all votes cast, i.e. 50 percent plus one vote. In the event that no candidate receives a majority, a runoff election will be held between the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes. When a runoff must be conducted, it is held the 28th day after the original election, unless postponed by court order.
