"My View From Seven Feet" is Joe Barry Carroll's musing on the mythical qualities some may want to assign a person standing seven feet tall. Carroll expresses his "view" in paintings that are celebratory, reflective, and hopeful. Each is paired with a short narrative that further conveys the artist's ruminations on relationships, legacy, sexuality, success, sports, culture, responsibility, and more.

Curator's Statement "My View From Seven Feet" is a tonal exhibit of figurative and abstract images by the seven-foot-tall Joe Barry Carroll. The moving and thoughtful pairings of paintings and narratives tell stories that commemorate our shared humanity. The artist invites a variety of moods and feelings with his signature use of yellows and reds, complimented with earth tones and hues of blue and green.

Carroll's rendering of the people, places, and memories that have impacted his "view" is inspiring, reminiscent, and relatable. The depictions of childhood, family, friends, and loves will feel familiar whether you grew up in the south, or in another country. A scene, a colorful background, or the tilt of a head will spark a memory of self, someone you know, or a place you’ve been. There is a mysterious quality that arouses curiosity, urging you to walk into a piece and go on a journey with the subject. The art and narrative excerpts from the book, "My View From Seven Feet" transform the personal into the universal, and create a feeling of kinship.
Tara Y. Coyt, Curator
