City of Roswell Water System Overview of Lead and Copper Corrosion Prevention and Monitoring

In Roswell, residents receive their drinking water from one of two sources: The Roswell Water Utility, which serves approximately 5,900 metered customers in downtown Roswell and surrounding areas; or Fulton County, which serves the remainder of the city. The Roswell Water Utility pulls its water from Big Creek, which is a tributary of the Chattahoochee River. Click here for a map of the city's service area.

The Roswell Water Utility tested for lead in its water in the summer of 2022, which is required by the Environmental Protection Division to be done every three years. The rule requires systems to monitor for lead and copper in drinking water. Systems are required to monitor drinking water at a customer’s tap. If lead concentrations exceed an action level of 15 parts per billion (PPB) or copper concentrations exceed an action level of 1.3 parts per million (PPM) in more than 10% of customer taps sampled, the system must undertake additional actions to control corrosion.

Roswell Water Utility is committed to providing our customers safe, reliable, and affordable drinking water. Keeping your household's water supply safe from lead is integral to our mission. We also want you to be confident with the safety of your drinking water and in the type of material used for your water service lines. In the past several years, the broad awareness of the risks of lead in drinking water has been elevated and it has led the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to make changes to the 1992 Lead and Copper Rule (LCR).

The Roswell Water Utility has no records indicating the presence of lead-containing service lines in our system, as well as no history of testing data indicating the presence of lead in our drinking water supply. Water is treated and continuously tested to confirm it meets Federal Safe Drinking Water standards when it leaves the treatment facility and travels through the water mains. The City of Roswell’s Water Utility has a comprehensive Corrosion Control Program to help prevent plumbing materials such as metals from breaking down into drinking water as it travels through our distribution system to each customer. However, if lead-based materials are in contact with drinking water, some risk remains. Older homes, built prior to 1986, may have private water lines containing materials, such as lead, that could affect water quality.

In the summer of 2024, Roswell started a new Lead and Copper Inspection Program in response to the EPA's new rule mandating water utilities across the nation to help identify and catalog the material of all public and private water service lines/laterals in their service area. The City has been providing flyers to customers when inspection crews are in their area. Customers are provided information about the work being performed and contact information for any questions they may have.

The City will also be partnering with schools and daycare facilities to ensure their facility plumbing is lead-free. New EPA regulations now require the drinking water in all elementary school and daycare facilities to be tested for lead and for schools to complete timely remediation if their water tests positive for lead.
