Overview and Project Description

The Grimes Bridge Road Corridor Improvement Project is a City of Roswell TSPLOST 2 project. It was initiated to provide safety and operational improvements

along Grimes Bridge Road from Oxbo Road to Dogwood Road,
along Dogwood Road from Riverside Road to SR-140/Holcomb Bridge Road, and
along Old Dogwood Road from Dogwood Road to SR-140/Holcomb Bridge Road.

Roswell's Grimes Bridge Road Corridor Improvement Project will tie into GDOT'sSR 400 Express Lanes Project, as well as the City's Riverside Complete Street Project.

Public Engagement & Feedback

May 15, 2023: Public Information Meeting

The Roswell Transportation Department invites the public to join them for a Public Information Open House for the TSPLOST2 Grimes Bridge Road Corridor Improvements project. The public involvement meeting will be Monday, May 15 from 5:30-7:30 PM at the Adult Recreation Center Ballroom, located at 830 Grimes Bridge Road. The meeting will be used to gain input from the public on the draft concept alternatives, which were designed based on last year's public feedback and outreach.

May 4, 2022 Public Information Meeting

Roswell's Department of Transportation gathered input on concerns about the corridor, as well as feedback regarding possible traffic-calming measures that could be implemented in the future. An in-person meeting was held on April 27 and a virtual meeting was held on May 4, 2022. In May 2022, the City of Roswell collected resident feedback and shared it with Mayor and City Council.

Please note that this project is independent from GDOT's proposed work on the SR 400 project and will be designed and constructed separately from GDOT's project.

Traffic-Calming Measures

Traffic-calming tools like the ones presented below include physical design measures that encourage drivers to use slower speeds and promote the safety of all road users.

About GDOT SR 400 Express Lanes Project

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) plans to add new, optional express lanes on State Route 400 (SR 400) from the North Springs MARTA Station to McFarland Parkway.

The project will add:

Two buffer-separated express lanes in each direction between the North Springs MARTA Station and McGinnis Ferry Road
One buffer-separated express lane in each direction from McGinnis Ferry Road to McFarland Parkway

Frequently Asked Questions

Why were some other traffic calming measures not considered?

Multi-lane Roundabouts: While mini and single lane roundabouts are being considered on this corridor, multi-lane roundabouts are not. Multi-lane roundabouts work best on high volume roadways, and this corridor is not considered high volume. Finally, multi-lane roundabouts have big footprints, taking up large amounts of right of way, which is not typically suitable for residential streets.
Traffic Signals or Stop Signs: While traffic signals and stop signs do slow cars done, they are not being considered as traffic calming measures for this corridor. To justify the installation of a traffic signal or stop sign, certain vehicle or pedestrian volumes must be met. This corridor does not have enough traffic to warrant a signal or stop sign. Adding signals or stop signs where not needed can cause operational issues, like increased delay, and safety issues, like increased rear end crashes.
Speed Bumps, Speed Tables and other Vertical Deflection: Traffic calming measures that involved vertical deflections are not approved for use in the City of Roswell. This is because vertical deflections can effect the operations and response times of emergency vehicles and also pose an increased rise to motorcycles and cyclists.

What about pedestrian and bicycle improvements?

Bicycle and pedestrian improvements to Grimes Bridge Road and Dogwood Road are included in the City of Roswell's December 2019 Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. These improvements include construction of sidewalk to fill in gaps in the existing sidewalk network as well as construction of a shared use path.
